Technation in American Furies ... Crime, Punishment, and Vengeance

Moira Gunn interviewed SASHA ABRAMSKY for TechNation about his book American Furies: Crime, Punishment, and Vengeance in the Age of Mass Imprisonment

He is senior fellow at the public policy organization Demos. They look at the state of American prisons, the efforts of the federal government to encourage technology in that arena, and how they compare to the rest of the world. It's scary!

6.8 earthquake in Niigata and Nagano (Japan) July 16, 2007

The quake had a magnitude of 6.8 and was centered in Niigata prefecture some 250 km (155 miles) northwest of Tokyo.

Buildings swayed as far away as Tokyo, and we felt a strong jolt at home - it actually lasted longer than other earthquakes we felt before.

Scary to see the fire at a nuclear power station - it was actually outside...

The saddest part is that already 7 people are confirmed dead.

Return of The Police - Shigemi in the news!

from Bloomberg News: The new Tour of The Police is already a success.

More than 1.77 million tickets for the tour have been sold so far, according to the band's publicist Clare Fisher at RMP. Tickets cost between $50 and $225 on online sites, though seats for some sold-out venues are on offer for $2,500 for two on EBay Inc.'s Web site.

But the cool thing: the media found my friend Shigemi at the concert. Shigemi is following the tour around the world.

``They made history here tonight,'' said Shig Hayashi, 40, a telecommunications engineer from Saitama, Japan, who said she quit her job of 13 years to attend Police concerts in Vancouver, New York and London. ``It was worth it.''

LiveEarth 7 7 07 starts

"Live Earth is a 24-hour, 7-continent concert series taking place on 7/7/07 that will bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people to trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis."

Too watch live you need Internet Explorer - maybe because the site is at MSN it does not work well with Firefox

The first show started in Sydney at 11am. In Tokyo it started at noon. Al Gore appeared as an hologram in the Tokyo concert! That was cool.

John Butler Trio just finished playing in Sydney. Great band, I never heard before, but for sure will check more of their work.
